Discovering The Census ED

The apartment building at the top of this page was my residence when the 1950 census was conducted. I will have to wait until April 1st 2022 to see what the census says, but I will be able to view the census the day it is released to the public because I have done my preliminary research to learn the ED where I lived April 1st 1950.

My sister was born April 4, 1950. According to the enumerator instructions my sister was born after 12:01 April 1, 1950 and therefore, should not have been enumerated. But was she? Guess we will have to wait until April 1st 2022 to find out….

First, I tried to locate a 1950 city directory for Washington, DC. Ancestry, Family Search and My Heritage all had Washington city directories for 1948, 1954 and 1960, but no 1950. As best I could tell, there may not be a 1950 Directory, at least online, at least for now.

I did a search and found my father listed at 1315 Peabody Street NW Apartment 1.

Actually, there are two indexes 1) Alpha and 2) By address

With the address I went to Steve Morse’s website and used the ED Locator, found several suggested ED’s. Checked the physical descriptions of each ED and located the address on the proper map, then viewed the building on both satellite and google maps.
