What will I learn? You will learn about and how to use Ancestry.com to trace your family history using traditional records and methods as well as using computer and internet researching techniques particularly those found on Ancestry
Will there be homework? Yes, it will be directed toward your own family history search. You will be expected to “surf” genealogical websites, particularly Ancestry.com
Will there be testing? Yes- Successfully identifying your ancestors and building a Tree is your test and your reward!
Will I receive a Grade? Yes, based 10% on attendance, 90% on classwork
What do I need for the class?
You will need comfortable appropriate attire for surfing the Internet
You will need an Ancestry.com account, either your own paid account or a trial account
You will need access to a computer-home, work, college, library where you can access Ancestry.com
You will need an email account-anywhere
You will need a library card to access library catalogs and websites

Can See Public Trees but not click on view
Can still work one’s own Tree, such as, add to, delete or edit but cannot add photos
Can see hints and stories and galleys but can not view the
Can see Free Databases-1940 Census, Find a Grave, 1880 Census?
Can visit databases marked as “web” , U-Tube and Familysearch sites which are usually non-Ancestry websites such as Find-a-grave or other offsite databases
Can access DNA stories but cannot save them
Can access DNA matches and correspond with those matches
Can see hints but can not review or save them. As an alternative, you can go to Familysearch or another site to see the same information to verify. Can not verify on Ancestry
Can see DNA profiles, 4 generations of a tree but not full tree, map, locations

In Directory-One can edit interests, edit and save a profile and search for and contact a member
Must know screen name to see that persons profile
In public profile-site preferences- one can search preferences and select Tree Colors for one’s own tree
DNA-
At end of 2017 Illumina obsoleted Omni Express chip which all the companies had been using. They began producing new GSA chip which is not compatible with any earlier chip.
23 and Me began using the GSA chip in August 2017
Gedmatch introduced Genesis in late 2017-files were not compatible with most vendors chips.
FTDNA Transfers-Transfers to FTDNA for Ancestry, 23 and Me and My Heritage
23 and Me V 3 and V 4 can be transferred but not V1 and V2
Ancestry V 1 and V2 can be transferred
My Heritage can be transferred- My Heritage says it has 1 Million testers (20% were transfers)
Dec 2017 Ancestry claimed they had
2 Million testers at end of 2016
5 Million new testers by end of 2017

Myths to avoid in Beginning Genealogy:
- You can buy a family crest
- The 1890 census totally burned
- Your whole family is online
- Your ancestor was a Cherokee Princess, you are descended from George Washington or someone else, very famous
- The courthouse burned and all records of my family were burned and do not exist
- Your ancestor’s name was changed at Ellis Island

Family Trees
Building your first Tree
- Manually
- Upload a GEDCOM
Manually-
- Click on Family Tree tab on menu bar
- Select-Start a New Tree
- You will be prompted to enter a name, birth date and place, gender and death date
- You can start with yourself or anyone your wish
- If you have had previous trees the screen and prompts may be different
- Once you have entered everyone you wish to include-give tree a name and set privacy options (Public or Private)
Uploading a GEDCOM
- In Family Trees menu tab select Upload a Gedcom file (Genealogical Data COMmunications)
- Browse your computer to locate the file
- Give Tree a name
- Select public or private tree
- Read and click on Submission Agreement
- Click upload GEDCOM link
Viewing a Tree:
- Pedigree-one persons ancestors
- Family View-one persons complete entered extended family
- Found at top left of tree page
- In both view leaf hint icons may appear
- You can drag different portions of the tree to another by placing your cursor on any blank part of the tree by holding down your left mouse button
- There is a search box at the top of the tree page
Managing Family Trees
- On main family tree page click on any person and a box will appearwith that person’s name which shows that person’s profile or overview of that person’s birth and death information. Other choices include:
- View Profile: see this person’s personal data, media files (images, video, audio, stories) , name and dates of birth and death for parents, spouse, and children
- Quick Edit: Launches pop-up box to change gender, status (deceased or living) birth and death date and place
- Search Records-this generates a full-blown search of all Ancestry.com databases and trees
- View this person’s Family Tree-you will see only the person’s direct lines of ancestry and descendants
- Add Relative-a pop-up box appears where you can add a brother, sister, spouse or child to the individual
- Leaf (Hint) Icon: This generates a list of hints Ancestry thinks might interest you concerning your tree. You can accept or ignore them
Navigating Tree Pages
- Located next to name of your tree
- Family Group Sheet
- Record of a single family unit-parents (Husband and Wife) and children including names, dates and places, including spouses of children
- Primary people in Group are husband and wife
- With “make Focus icon” you can change the focus person to another person on that page
- Review FGSheets to spot missing information on people and family members
- Review the FGSheet for missing or lacking documentation
Tree Overview
- This is a summary about your tree-people, photos, stories, hints, people you have invited to the tree or who help manage your tree, and a thumbnail of your photos
- Media Gallery-your collection of images, audios, videos, stories
- All Hints- displayed in person alphabetical order. Can be filtered by first name or surname
- Facebook Import-bases on information in your tree and Facebook you will have the option to see a list of people related to you.
Tree Settings
- View and edit privacy Settings-can change back and forth
- Private-no one except who you invite can see your tree
- Living people can be set to private
- Share Your Tree-
- Gives option to invite people to your tree, either by email or using your Ancestry username
- You can set if this person is a guest or has management capabilities
- Guest-can view and leave messages
- Contributor-same as guest but can add photos and stories
- Editor-same as contributor but can add and edit people
- Add Content to Tree (photos, video, audio, stories)
- Adding Photos-click photos link, the “Add Photos”, then navigate to where photo is on your computer, read and accept agreement, and upload file Accepts up to 15 MB
- Adding Audio- in Media Galley through Ancestry system via your computers microphone. Follow prompts
- Adding Video- in Media Gallery follow prompts
- Adding Family Stories- Cannot exceed 15 MB
Analyzing, Using and Correcting
- Green Leaf Hints can be added to people in your tree, reviewed, edited and ignored
- Hint Comparison Labels-New or Different
- Mobile apps now have leaf hints
Connecting with other researchers via Member Connect
In activity someone may have saved something from your tree and you wish to contact them as a potential relative
You can find others researching your families or locations and be able to contact them in Member Connect
