Adventures-Family Search-Why Use Family Search?

(Based on Video by James Tanner)

Power of a unified, networked Family Tree

Concerns:

Family Tree is always changing my entries and data.

Family Tree has too many errors

Family Tree is not verified and reliable

Family Tree is :

An accumulation of submissions from thousands of people for over more than 100 years

            Is unified and Collaborative

Is the solution, not the Problem

How it works:

Right side of the page shows problems/issues to check

It is collaborative- helping others from duplicating one another research work

Save time and effort over years

Important Features:

Reliably backed by the LDS Church

            Uniformly standardized entries

            Free

            Universally accessible

When your Tree is on your own computer/software:

No one else can see it

You might, however, see this as an advantage

Where do I Start?

Start by learning about the program by starting to work with the program

Welcome to the Family History Guide at thefhuide.com

How do we use the Family Tree to find our ancestors and relatives:

If working on and not using Family Tree how do you know someone has not already done the research you are attempting to uncover?

            Log-In to view Family Search

Be sure to remember Log-in information

            Each Person has an ID

Start checking and verifying all entries

You are creating an unbroken solid line of connections supported by sources

Avoid starting at the end of the lineage

Surprise, the information in a Family Tree is not always correct

Red icons on a tree page are problems to view or resolve such as people over the age of 120 or children born to a deceased mother or father

Some errors are not so obvious- location may not have been created when birth took place or agreeing with a person’s timeline or the historical timeline.

Unless you check carefully, you might not be related to the last person in a family lineage.

You can add information by finding sources-records or documents

You can use the information in the sources to add or correct the entries and also add people

Use a selection of helpful applications to enhance the program- See App Gallery

Family Tree automatically add record hints to the right side of the Tree entry page

Evaluate all records:

            Sources plus Memories equal reliability

Memories add depth to each individual

Adding records to an individual first, if possible, discourages random changes

Changes are an invitation to Collaboration

Individuals can get together and collaborate

Researchers can monitor Watch List of up to 2000 individuals

It is the nature of Wikis and Family Tree to feature changes

Changes:

            Every change can be seen

Every change is documented as to who made the change and when

Every change has a “send a message” item or “send an email”

Removing Information:

One may remove anything they place in Memories

No one else has editing ability other than originator/you for Memories

Memories need to be linked to an individual (s)

No one else can see it until it is tagged or linked to an individual

Information on Living People is not visable until the person is marked as Not Living

Records from Ancestry, Roots Magic and Ancestral Quest can be moved to Family Search’s Tree after the person’s death.

Family Tree discourages downloading GEDCOMs, but there is a way to do it.

A GEDCOM will end up being a duplicate and duplicates need to be deleted
